Can I use the 12mm board on the floor straight over the floor joists without any other plywood underneath? Our Advice

Matthew Unfortunately not, both the 6 and 12mm boards are only suitable as an overlay system over existing wooden substrates, to increase rigidity. As a substitute for timber, the only other option would be a 22mm structural board such as Gifafloor. Should I use the 6mm or 12mm backer board for a masonry wall? What are the intended uses for each thickness? ThanksOur Advice

Hello and thank you for your enquiry. The 6mm boards can be used on the floor as an overlay for timber surface, or as boarding for masonry walls, so the 6mm will be fine for your project. The 12mm board can be used on stud walls where extra rigidity may be required, due to wide stud spacing, or timber floors that need extra bracing. How do you attach this backer board onto a stone surface (an old unused hearth)? Our Advice

Hello and thank you for your enquiry. While Hardiebacker can be used to line the inside walls of a burner surround, it is not recommended for use as a hearth board. The original heath already being constructed stone/masonry, to level or repair it before covering with tiles or a slab, a cement-based repair mortar should be used instead. When lining the wall areas, Hardiebacker can be fitted to masonry by using a cement based tile adhesive, such as our Kwikflex or Standflex, before fixing suitable wall tiles with a Heat Resistant adhesive, such as the Palace Heat Resist: https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/toolshed-tile-adhesive-kwik-flex-grey-floor-tile-adhesive https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/toolshed-tile-adhesive-standard-flex-grey-tile-adhesive https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/palace-heat-resistant-tile-adhesive-10-kg If you wish to discuss your project in more detail or to arrange samples or a quotation, please call our sales team on 01536 314730 or request a call-back via the link below, and they will be more than happy to help you. https://ideas.wallsandfloors.co.uk/request-a-callback Regards Walls And Floors

how do you fix tile backer board to a wooden floorOur Advice

Hi Richard, For an overlay for a wooden floor, we recommend the 6mm boards. They need bedding into a layer of tile adhesive which helps to level the boards on installation and fill any possible voids, followed by screws to secure it. The datasheet and basic fixing guide are available in the link below, but a full installation guide is also available on request: https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/media/uploads/DocumentDocumentHardiebacker_technical%20sheet-nov20121352292133.pdf Regards Walls And Floors
